A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer from Mumbai was allegedly duped of Rs 2 lakh by a fraudster posing as a Crime Branch officer in Delhi. In the digital age, scammers and cyber fraudsters keep adopting new methods of cheating.
In such scams, the fraudster somehow convinces the user or victim that he is a Crime Branch Officer. After this the fraudster threatens the victim that some wrongdoing has been committed in his name. In such situations, the person picking up the call often gets scared that he might end up in jail.
Further, the fraudster tries to persuade the victim to hush up the matter by transferring money through some means. The victim is assured that the money will be returned after the completion of the investigation if the person has not committed any mistake.

However, this does not happen. By the time the victim realises that it was a fake call and that he or she has been scammed, it is too late. The fraudster gets away with the job.
How To Avoid Such Scams
To avoid such scams, one has to be cautious about calls coming from unknown numbers.
If a call comes from any person posing as a senior officer, one must get alert and not believe the caller straightaway.
