The country is already seeing the effects of winter. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of another cyclone this season amid intermittent lightning and rain in a number of states. The northeast monsoon season is when the Indian Ocean is most active, with storm activity usually reaching its zenith in November.
But things have been comparatively quiet this year. Cyclone Dana was the only notable post-monsoon storm to date.
A fresh cyclone in the Bay of Bengal has now prompted an alarm from the IMD. On November 21, 2024, a cyclone is predicted to form over the Andaman Sea, south of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is anticipated that a low-pressure region will form by November 23 as this system intensifies between November 22 and 23.
It will be the season's second cyclone if this system turns into a storm. This storm will be called Fengal, pronounced "Feenjal," as suggested by Saudi Arabia and in accordance with the naming procedures recommended by member nations.
This low-pressure system is predicted by the IMD to intensify, shift westward and north-westward, and ultimately develop into a cyclonic storm. According to the current estimate, the storm is expected to hit northern Sri Lanka between November 26 and 27.
The IMD has emphasised that it is too soon to make a firm forecast regarding the cyclone's path and strength. Whether it intensifies into a storm will depend on how the weather system moves over the next few days.
