Mumbai Weather: After experiencing the second coldest November night in a decade at 16.5 degrees Celsius, Mumbai saw a significant rise in minimum temperatures, reaching 24 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. This shift in weather was attributed to cyclone Fengal, which made landfall in Tamil Nadu over the weekend.
The cyclone has brought an influx of moisture to the region, leading to overcast skies and altering the wind patterns from the chilly, dry northerlies to humid east-southeasterlies. Weather experts indicate that this change has resulted in higher humidity levels and increased night temperatures.
At the Santacruz observatory, the minimum temperature of 24 degrees Celsius was 4 degrees Celsius above the seasonal norm, while Colaba recorded 24.5 degrees Celsius, which is 2 degrees Celsius higher than usual. On Monday, the temperature at Santacruz was notably lower at 20.6 degrees Celsius.
The Times Of India report quoted, weather enthusiast Athreya Shetty as stating that, the moisture brought in by cyclone Fengal has impacted Mumbai and Maharashtra. The cyclone has now transformed into a depression over the Arabian Sea, off the Karnataka coast and continues to influence local weather patterns. This system is expected to affect conditions in the area until the weekend.
Amateur forecaster Abhijit Modak noted that the cyclone has transitioned into a well-marked low-pressure area, resulting in heavy rainfall in Mangaluru, which received 156mm in just 24 hours along with thunderstorms. He explained that the shift from dry northeasterly winds to moist southeasterlies is likely to result in scattered rain and thunderstorms across southwest Maharashtra and the Konkan coast over the next few days.
