Cyclone Hamoon Updates: The severe cyclone Hamoon that made landfall yesterday in Bangladesh has weakened and is now laid as a depression over the south of Mizoram, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bhubaneswar said Wednesday.

An IMD official said, "Cyclone Hamoon has weakened significantly and now lies as a depression over the south of Mizoram. This very severe cyclone storm-packed winds gusting at between 130 and 145 Kmph while it is inside the Bay of Bengal. However, by the time it made landfall, it weakened into a cyclonic storm and windspeeds of between 75 kmph and 85 kmph gusting upto 95 kmph."

He informed further that light to moderate rainfall activity had been witnessed over Odisha and the highest quatum of rainfall recorded was 52 mm over Paradeep.

"There is no significant damage over the eastern coast of India. Some parts of Northeast India, particularly Tripura and Mizoram, are going to witness rainfall activity because of the system. There is a depression lying over Mizoram, which is likely to further weaken into a well marked low pressure area," he added.

Earlier, the Met has said that "The severe cyclonic storm ‘Hamoon’ over Northeast Bay of Bengal lay centred at 2330 hours IST of 24th October about 420 km east-southeast of Digha (West Bengal), 150 km east-southeast of Khepupara (Bangladesh) and 80 km south-southwest of Chittagong (Bangladesh)."

Meanwhile, a 'storm warning cage number 2' was also mounted at Pamban Port in Rameswaram to warn fishermen about Severe Cyclonic Storm 'Hamoon' over the Bay of Bengal. An alert has been issued for light to moderate rainfall at most places in the northeastern states of Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Meghalaya, as well as south Assam.

According to the weather department, Mizoram on October 24 and Tripura can anticipate heavy downpours. In the said regions the heavy rainfall will persist till October 25 too. However, the rain intensity will decrease by October 26.

“Light to moderate rainfall is very likely at many places with isolated heavy rainfall over Mizoram on October 25. Light to moderate rainfall is likely at many places over Mizoram and Tripura on October 26,” the weather office said.
