The Indian Coast Guard geared up for its response to Cyclone Mocha on Wednesday, May 10. The IMD has shared weather updates with fisheries and civil administration and issued warnings as the cyclone approaches.
The ICG units in West Bengal and Odisha have been placed on high alert and are on standby to meet any eventuality of Cyclone Mocha. Weather warnings have been broadcast through ICG ships on patrol and aircraft on surveillance, as well as, Coast Guard Radar Operating Station (ROS) Paradip and Haldia both in English and vernacular language, news agency ANI reported.
Here are the latest updates on Cyclone Mocha:
- Earlier today, the India Meteorological Department said the cyclonic circulation over Southeast Bay of Bengal has moved towards west-northwest direction and intensified into deep depression on Wednesday. The region is nearly 540 km away from west-southwest of Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
- The IMD, which is closely monitoring the cyclonic storm, said the deep depression is 1,460 km south-southwest of Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh and 1,350 KM south-southwest of Sittwe in Myanmar.
- The deep depression will continue to move towards north-north westwards. Later, it will gradually intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm on May 11.
- On May 12, Mocha will turn into a very severe cyclonic storm over the southeast and adjoining areas of central Bay of Bengal, the IMD said.
- The cyclonic storm is likely to re-curve gradually and will move towards the north-northeast direction.
- Mocha will begin to grow weaker from May 13. It will pass through southeast of Bangladesh and north Myanmar coasts between Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh and Kyaukpyu in Myanmar (Rakhine State) around forenoon of May 14 with maximum sustained wind speed of 110-120 kmph gusting to 130 kmph, the IMD forecast said.
- The Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration has issued alerts and public advisories amid the cyclonic circulation over Bay of Bengal. Fishermen of Andaman and Nicobar coasts have been advised not to venture into the sea till May 13.
