Cyclone Remal: The severe cyclonic storm Remal made landfall between the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh, unleashing winds up to 135 kmph. The cyclone started its landfall process between Sagar Island in West Bengal and Khepupara in Bangladesh around 9.15 p.m. on Sunday, as it intensified and moved northwards by 11:30 pm. Cyclone Remal emerged as a formidable force of nature, leaving behind a trail of destruction in its wake. The severe cyclonic storm resulted in torrential rains, flooding homes and farmlands, and uprooting trees.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the severe cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ began moving northwards following its landfall between the West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts on Sunday night.
“The system would continue to move nearly northwards for some more time and then north-northeastwards and weaken gradually into a Cyclonic Storm by the morning of 27 May 2024,” IMD said.
Cyclone Remal: Here Are The Latest Updates
- Cyclone Remal left behind a trail of destruction in nearby areas, prompting the evacuation of nearly a million people over the past two days. Following the landfall, the Kolkata Municipality team and Kolkata Police Disaster Management team started clearing uprooted trees in the Alipore area of the city.
- Priyabrata Roy, Deputy Commissioner of South Kolkata, told news agency ANI that authorities are trying to clear roadways of uprooted trees, and the situation is likely to improve by morning. Throughout the night, unified control rooms watch the situation.

- When Cyclone Remal hit the coast, it brought heavy rain along the coasts and a spell of 20mm to 30mm rain in Kolkata. Several homes and streets in low-lying areas adjoining Kolkata were inundated. One person also sustained injuries in Kolkata's Bibir Bagan area, when a wall collapsed due to a heavy downpour.

- The Eastern and South Eastern Railways cancelled multiple trains, and the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata suspended flight operations for 21 hours, affecting 394 flights. The airport announced on Sunday that operations would resume at 9 am today. The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata also stopped its operations in the wake of a severe cyclonic storm.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi also held a meeting at his residence before the cyclone made landfall. The prime minister assessed the readiness for Cyclone ‘Remal’ in the North Bay of Bengal.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Union Home Minister Amit Shah wrote, , "In the wake of the landfall of Cyclone Remal, spoke to concerned officials. Adequate deployment of NDRF has been made in all the areas where the cyclone may have an impact. People are being evacuated to safer areas, and the disaster response agencies are working on a war footing to ensure that lives and properties are protected. The Modi government is committed to achieving minimum casualties in disasters."
