Dog Breed Ban India: The central government banned 23 aggressive dog breeds in the country amid deaths due to increasing pet dog attacks in the country. It directed states to prohibit the sale and breeding of ferocious dogs such as Pitbull Terrier, American Bulldog, Rottweiler and Mastiffs, effectively barring people from keeping such breeds as pets at home. The Centre also banned the import of these dogs from outside the country effective from March 12.

Pet dogs of these breeds are to be sterilised

Apart from a ban on future sale and breeding, the centre has asked the state animal husbandry departments to sterilise pet dogs of aggressive breeds to stop them from breeding. In a letter dated March 12 to chief secretaries of all states and UTs, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying directed the ban.

Action after deaths, and serious injuries due to pet dog bites

The action by the central government came following many instances of pet dogs of these aggressive breeds attacking and killing innocent human beings. In the last few years, the number of attacks has risen sharply with many incidents captured on camera. The department said that it has been approached by citizens, citizen forums, and Animal Welfare Organizations (AWOs) with requests to prohibit certain dog breeds from being kept as pets or for other purposes.

Earlier, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying set up a committee chaired by the Animal Husbandry Commissioner, including stakeholders and experts, to address such attacks. The committee identified 23 dog breeds, including mixed and cross breeds, as potentially aggressive and hazardous to humans.

Pitbull, Akita, and Rottweiler are among the banned breeds

The banned breeds in India include some of the most sought-after aggressive breeds such as the American Pitbull, American Bulldog, Rottweiler and Japanese Akita.
