Additional DCP (South East) Aishwarya Sharma said, “There is an old temple here, and next to it are old jhuggis where scrap dealers live. The wall collapsed due to heavy rain overnight. We have now evacuated these jhuggis so that no such incident occurs in future.”
Initially, it was described as a case of building collapse by emergency notification, but subsequent investigation revealed that a wall had collapsed, injuring several.
People living in the vulnerable area have been relocated from there.
The incident occurred after the national capital experienced torrential rainfall late on Friday and early on Saturday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for the day in most parts of the capital, warning of heavy rain accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms.
People living in low-lying areas and structurally vulnerable places have been requested to exercise caution as more rain is expected in the coming days.
