AIIMS Delhi: A five-year-old girl underwent awake craniotomy (Conscious Sedation technique) surgery at All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) Delhi recently and became the youngest person in the world to undergo the procedure, news agency ANI reported on Saturday. The girl went under the knife for left perisylvian intraaxial brain tumour, ANI said in its report.
The young patient reportedly cooperated very well throughout the procedure and remained well at the end and post-operation stage too. There was excellent teamwork and support by neuro anesthesia and Neuroradiology teams for providing high-quality functional MRI brain studies, stated an official release by the AIIMS.
Awake craniotomy is a neurosurgical technique and type of craniotomy that allows a surgeon to remove a brain tumor while the patient is awake to avoid brain damage. During the surgery, the neurosurgeon performs cortical mapping to identify vital areas, called the "eloquent brain", that should not be disturbed while removing the tumor.
"Awake craniotomy allows the neurosurgeon to maximize tumor resection while preserving neurological function. The concept of awake craniotomy may be frightening for the patient, so the role of the operative team is paramount in selecting the proper patient and counsel the patient so that he or she understands what is expected from him or her during surgery," the US government's National Institutes of Health (NIH) says on its website.
