Delhi Air Pollution Update: As pollution levels continue to rise in Delhi, enforcement against vehicles without Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates remains weak, with nearly 30 lakh vehicles operating on city roads without valid PUCs, Jagran.com reported.

Out of approximately 75 lakh registered vehicles in Delhi with remaining life, only 45 lakh PUC certificates have been issued so far in 2025. This means around 29 lakh 81 thousand 795 vehicles are running without PUCs.

The figures highlight a clear decline in compliance compared to previous years:

- 2024: 49 lakh 32 thousand 973 PUCs issued
- 2023: 52 lakh 30 thousand 292 PUCs
- 2022: 54 lakh 73 thousand 13 PUCs

Even with 15 days left in 2025, the number of PUCs is unlikely to match last year’s total, showing a shortfall of about 3 lakh 86 thousand 912 certificates so far this year.

Transport expert and former Deputy Commissioner of Transport Anil Chikara stressed the need for strict enforcement. He said vehicle owners must feel the pressure that failing to get a PUC could lead to action. The law provides for a Rs 10,000 fine on vehicles without PUCs, yet many continue to ignore it.

Chikara added that the lack of compliance points to negligence by the transport department and other agencies responsible for controlling pollution.
