Amid the rising pollution level in the national capital, a total of 24 officers and employees of the Agriculture Department were suspended including the employees from Agriculture Development Officer to Agriculture Supervisor. The suspension comes a few days after Nayab Singh Saini took oath as the Chief Minister of Haryana.

Earlier on October 16, the Supreme Court criticised the Haryana and Punjab governments for failing to prosecute those found guilty of stubble burning. The court has summoned the chief secretaries of both states to appear before it on October 23 to explain.

"This is not a political matter. If chief secretary is acting at somebody's behest, we will issue summons against them as well. Next Wednesday we are going to physically call chief secretary and explain everything. Nothing has been done, the same is with the Punjab government. The attitude is of complete defiance," the bench had said.

A bench of Justice Abhay S Oka, Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Justice Augustine George had said that both governments had been told about this earlier but no action has been taken on it. The Punjab government has not filed a single case in the last three years.

Meanwhile, as the pollution continues to increase, the anti-pollution measure GRAP II has been implemented in the national capital, starting from today, October 22.

Haryana State Pollution Control Board Secretary Pradeep Kumar said on Tuesday that the cases of stubble burning reduced from 7,000 in 2023 to 2,300 in 2021.

Speaking to ANI, Kumar said "In 2021, there were around 7,000 cases of stubble burning which has now reduced to 2,300 in 2023. Farmers are being encouraged and nodal officers are monitoring the situation to decrease the cases."
