Delhi's Indra Gandhi International Airport (IGI), the busiest aviation hub in India, has been in the news for flight delays, diversions and tense confrontations between passengers and airport staff. In response, authorities are trying to find solutions, including the scheduled reopening of the long-closed Runway 10/28 in early May.
In the past week, the Delhi Airport has faced major disruptions that have impacted both domestic and international flights. Nearly 582 flights were delayed, leading to chaos across terminals and even confrontations between passengers and ground staff, according to reports. Videos capturing frustrated travelers demanding answers and compensation from airline personnel quickly went viral on social media, underscoring the scale of the turmoil.
Multiple reports are blaming the chaos on poor planning and overlooked warnings. On a single day, 68 per cent of flights were delayed, with many planes forced into holding patterns or diverted entirely.
Passengers Took Social Media To Express Their discontent
Passengers took to social media to voice their frustration over the poor coordination between DIAL, Air Traffic Control (ATC), and the airlines. A passenger Jagriti said, "When the runway closure was already planned, why was the schedule not changed? We have to wait for hours."
Another passenger Abhishek said, "Airlines have failed to give timely updates. The behavior of airlines is also not good.”
“A fight broke out between Air India employees and angry passengers over a several-hour delay of a Delhi-Mumbai flight. Frustrated passengers confronted ground staff, leading to heated arguments and scuffles,” a passenger shared on X.

According to aviation experts, this situation didn’t happen overnight. Both analysts and airline insiders had raised concerns earlier about the growing pressure on IGI airport’s infrastructure-especially following the resurfacing-related closure of Runway 10/28 last year.
Originally built to manage around 1,200 flight movements daily, the airport has been stretched beyond capacity, particularly with the surge in summer travel. Losing one of its three runways only worsened the strain, slashing operational flexibility and triggering widespread delays.
Amid growing disruptions, Delhi airport has announced that Runway 10/28 will reopen in the first week of May. The runway, which was closed for resurfacing and technical upgrades, is a vital piece of infrastructure expected to significantly ease congestion once operational.
