Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday announced that the party will contest the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections independently, ruling out any alliance with the Congress. This statement comes amid the INDIA bloc's push for opposition unity against the BJP.
“There will be no alliance in Delhi," Kejriwal said at a press conference in the city.
The Congress and AAP had contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Delhi as allies under the INDIA bloc. The two parties even campaigned for each other. Kejriwal, who was out on interim bail during the campaign, also supported Congress and sought votes for its candidates in the Delhi Assembly elections.
Notably, Congress contested the Haryana Assembly elections independently, severing ties with AAP after disputes over seat-sharing. Following their defeat to the BJP, AAP leaders strongly criticised the Congress, accusing the party of sidelining its allies, which they claimed contributed to the loss.
Kejriwal’s decision is also significant as MVA, a coalition of three INDIA bloc parties, recently suffered defeat in Maharashtra Assembly elections.
The AAP supremo also tore into the Center after the attack on him during padayatra. "I had this expectation that Home Minister Amit Shah would take some action after I raised the issue (law & order)... But, instead of that, I was being attacked during my padayatra. Liquid was thrown at me, it was harmless, but it could have been harmful," Kejriwal said.
The Delhi Assembly elections will determine the fate of the 70-member legislature, where the AAP currently holds 62 seats. The ruling party has recently announced its first list of 11 candidates, including six leaders who switched from the BJP and Congress.
