Delhi Bomb Scare: Delhi Police has traced the origin of the multiple bomb threat emails received by around 150 schools in Delhi to Budapest, the capital of Hungary, officials said on Tuesday. The police said that the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the mail address used in sending the scare mail was traced to Budapest, adding that they will soon contact their counterpart in Hungary to further the investigation.
An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. It identifies and allows devices to communicate over the internet.
Mail Sent From Mail.Ru Server
The email, allegedly sent from a mail.ru server, claimed that explosives were planted on the school premises. This triggered massive evacuations and searches as panic-stricken parents rushed to pick up their children on May 1. Later the security agencies declared the call as a hoax and nothing suspicious was found at the campuses of the schools.
The police, after filing an FIR in the case, wrote to the Russian mailing service company 'mail.ru' via Interpol.
The police were investigating the IP address used to send the emails, as well as the sender and origin of the mail, to decipher the conspiracy and motive behind the bomb hoax that caused panic across Delhi-NCR on Wednesday.
Officials said an initial probe has led to the suspicion of a "deeper conspiracy" hatched by a terror group during the ongoing Lok Sabha polls, adding that the threat mail could have been sent by an ISIS module.
