In a race against time, a green corridor was established to transport a heart from the Delhi airport to Fortis Hospital in Gurugram, covering 18 kilometres in 13 minutes, the medical facility said.
According to the hospital authorities, the heart was transported from Kolkata to Gurugram on Wednesday, with the help of around 100 police officers, to save the life of a 34-year-old man from Rohtak.
The patient was in critical need of a heart transplant due to serious heart failure. A government hospital in Kolkata had a donor heart available. A group of doctors from Fortis Hospital in Gurugram set out right once to recover the valuable organ since every minute that passed was critical.
Police in Kolkata established the first green corridor from a government hospital where a 54-year-old woman was deemed brain dead. They said that the heart was transferred from the hospital to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata with permission from the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO).

After that, the heart was transported by Indigo Airlines to Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport. In collaboration with medical personnel, the Delhi and Gurugram police established an additional green corridor.
The organ made the 18-kilometre journey from IGI Airport to Fortis Hospital in Gurugram in only 13 minutes, the hospital said, in spite of heavy traffic and an unexpected downpour.
With the assistance and backing of almost 100 police officers, the entire procedure was completed in four hours, according to the statement. A group of medical professionals headed by Dr Udgeath Dhir, Cardiothoracic Vascular Surgery, Fortis Gurugram, implanted the organ as it arrived at the hospital.
