The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is set to conduct a demolition drive targeting encroachments on the Yamuna flood plain near South of Gurdwara, Majnu Ka Tila on July 13-14. This anti-encroachment drive has sparked significant concern among the residents, primarily Pakistani Hindus, who received eviction notices late Thursday evening.

The demolition notice follows a series of legal actions. The Delhi High Court in March directed the DDA not to take any coercive action against the residents. An interim order was issued on March 12, in response to a petition filed by Ravi Ranjan Singh, challenging the notice of vacation dated March 4.

Advocate RK Bali, representing the petitioner, highlighted that the public notice demanded evacuation by March 6, threatening demolition for non-compliance.

However, the DDA's counsel pointed out that the demolition drive is in compliance with a National Green Tribunal (NGT) order dated January 29. The order mandates the removal of all encroachments on the Yamuna Flood Plain Zone adjacent to Majnu Ka Tila, as part of an execution application from 2019.

Residents, worried about the impending demolition, are primarily Pakistani Hindu refugees who have lived in Majnu Ka Tila for several years. They have established their lives there, with children attending nearby government schools currently undergoing examinations. The local police have been requested to ensure security and maintain order during the drive.
