Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's wife Kamlesh Thakur, on Saturday, registered a victory on a key bypoll seat in the state. She won the Dehra by-election by a margin of 9,399 votes over BJP candidate Hoshiyar Singh. The counting of votes for the election, which was held on Wednesday, began at 8 am earlier today.
Dehra seat witnessed a record voting in the by-polls, with over 65 per cent of voters casting their votes. While Kamlesh Thakur won 32,737 votes, Singh could only manage 23,338 votes. Dehra seat comes under the limits of Kangra district.
CM Sukhu Says Conspiracy Failed
After his wife secured a win on her electoral debut, Chief Minister Sukhu expressed happiness over the win. He highlighted the Congress's rise from a poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections to a splendid bypoll performance.

"Just a month ago, BJP candidates claimed three Lok Sabha seats with a significant margin. Now, our confidence is bolstered with assured victories in two seats and a tough contest in Hamirpur," he said while crediting the win to his government's work over the past 16 months.
Sukhu further said that a conspiracy to topple the Congress government in the state has failed.
Congress's Resurgence After Rajya Sabha Polls Set Back
Earlier this year, the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh faced a major crisis after it lost the lone Rajya Sabha seat, even after having requisite strength in the legislative assembly. Six Congress MLAs cross-voted in favour of BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan. The Speaker later disqualified them.

Congress candidate and senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi lost the election in a draw of lots after a draw. The crisis further deepened after the BJP demanded a floor test of the Congress government.
