Delhi Election 2025: Ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has strongly criticised the Election Commission of India (ECI) for its inaction on alleged attacks targeting Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kejriwal compared the Election Commission's lethargy to the character Kumbhakaran from the Hindu epic Ramayana, stating, “In the Ramayana, it is written that Kumbhakaran slept for six months and then woke up for the next six months. The Election Commission probably never wakes up.” He also used the hashtag #amitshahkigundagardi, referring to alleged misconduct by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The AAP leader’s remarks come amid growing allegations that his party is facing multiple attacks. In light of these incidents, Kejriwal has written to the Delhi Chief Election Officer (CEO) urging immediate action regarding the attacks on AAP workers, particularly in the New Delhi Assembly constituency, according to news agency IANS.

AAP National Spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating violence out of fear of losing the upcoming elections. She highlighted an incident from January 18, when stones were thrown at Kejriwal and alleged that the police failed to apprehend the suspects, Rohit Tyagi and Shanky, despite their serious criminal backgrounds.

In a related incident, members of the Maharashtra Valmiki Samaj and Dalit Mapanchayat attacked an AAP election campaign vehicle, protesting against Kejriwal. Kakkar attributed this violence to the BJP, claiming, “The morale of BJP goons has increased so much that today they are openly attacking the AAP campaign van. The eyes of the Election Commission in Delhi are closed; they are not able to see any of the BJP's misdeeds. Such hooliganism will not work in Delhi.”

The protestors vandalised the AAP campaign vehicle, damaging its LED display. Kakkar expressed alarm over the BJP's alleged role in these attacks. AAP leader Jasmine Shah condemned the violence, stating, “BJP’s goons attacked and vandalised the AAP campaign van in the New Delhi constituency. The two BJP goons, Rohit Tyagi and Shanky, who were captured in the video attacking, are the same individuals who threw stones at Arvind Kejriwal’s car. You can see in the footage that the attack occurred in front of the police, who then told the goons, ‘Now go, your work is done.’”

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi also shared a video on X, alleging that BJP workers physically attacked AAP members and stole their pamphlets in Govindpuri. She stated, “The extent of hooliganism in Delhi has reached its peak. In a state of panic over the prospect of losing the elections, BJP workers are now indulging in hooliganism in every street.”

As the February 5 polling date approaches for Delhi's 70-member Assembly, tensions continue to rise, with intense campaigning from AAP, BJP and Congress. The votes will be counted on February 8.
