Two persons, one of whom was a former international wrestler, were detained by the Delhi Police on Wednesday for smuggling charas from Himachal Pradesh and selling them here, an official stated. According to the official, 350 grams of charas worth over Rs 10 lakhs were found by police in the accused's possession while they were being driven by a Mercedes.

Hanumante, 30, a former wrestler, and Adnan Ahmed, 32, have been identified as the accused, according to police.

"The team received a tip-off on Monday night that the drug traffickers are purchasing charas from Malana, Himachal Pradesh and further selling the same in different parts of Delhi, NCR and other parts of India," Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Sanjay Bhatia said.

After setting up a trap close to the Wazirabad flyover, police claimed that two people in a Mercedes were taken into custody.

They admitted during questioning that they obtained the charas from the Kullu district's Malana village. In light of this, Bhatia added, a case has been filed in accordance with the applicable NDPS Act provisions. According to Hanumante's statement to the police, he competed in junior international wrestling. He has competed in the "super heavyweight" category at the national level as well.

"During the competition in the year 2014, he sustained injury and got bed ridden for some time. Thereafter, he fell into bad company and started consuming drugs,” the Additional CP said.

The officer went on to say that Hanumante used to buy expensive charas from Delhi after developing a drug addiction.

"So he went to Malana to purchase charas. He purchased it for his own consumption and further to sell at higher rates. The other accused Adnan came in contact with Hanumante during lockdown," said the officer.
