The Delhi government has proposed four new elevated roads in South Delhi to ease heavy traffic congestion. The planned routes include: an extension linking the main Chhatarpur Road with SSN Marg; an elevated corridor from Chhatarpur’s 100-Foot Road to the IGNOU Gate; a separate stretch along IGNOU Road; and a direct route from Anuvrat Marg to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport via INA Market. The Public Works Department (PWD) has been directed to conduct a feasibility study, according to an official familiar with the matter.

South Delhi Locations Face Heavy Traffic

Residents of several South Delhi localities, including Freedom Fighters Enclave and Sainik Farm, have long faced poor connectivity due to persistent traffic congestion on the IGNOU main road, senior officials said. With buildings and shops lining both sides of the road, widening is not an option. To manage the flow, the Public Works Department (PWD) had earlier installed concrete barriers to separate incoming and outgoing traffic, but congestion remains a major issue.

To find a lasting solution, the department is now considering constructing elevated roads. IGNOU Road is a key connector between Indira Gandhi National Open University and Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, serving residential areas such as Neb Sarai, Freedom Fighters Enclave, Paryavaran Complex, and Saidulajab village, and providing access to the Saket Metro station. However, encroachments by shopkeepers and hawkers have narrowed the road, compounding traffic problems. With no alternate routes, commuters from nearby colonies are left with few options, resulting in frequent jams at the IGNOU Road-MB Road T-point and near the Ambedkar Nagar depot.

2 Km Elevated Road Linking Chhatarpur’s 100-Foot Road With IGNOU

One of the key proposals is a 2-km elevated road linking Chhatarpur’s 100-Foot Road with IGNOU, which officials believe will ease congestion in surrounding areas and help divert traffic headed towards Gurgaon and Qutub Minar. Currently, vehicles travelling between Chhatarpur and IGNOU must navigate through Qutub Minar and the Saket Metro area.

Flyover Chhatarpur Road And SSN Marg

Another plan under consideration is a flyover at the busy junction of Chhatarpur Road and SSN Marg. A feasibility study will soon be undertaken to assess traffic flow and the potential benefits of the flyover.

Elevated Road From Anuvrat Marg To IGI Airport Via INA Market

A larger and more complex proposal involves an elevated road from Anuvrat Marg to IGI Airport via INA Market. Still in the preliminary stage, the project’s alignment and access points will be determined after the feasibility report is completed.

During a recent site visit, officials noted that Chhatarpur’s 100-Foot Road spans about 3 km and is 27 to 30 metres wide. Heavy traffic was observed in both directions. Responding to complaints from local MLA Kartar Singh Tanwar, officials discussed preliminary solutions, including a combined flyover from the Anuvrat Marg traffic signal to the DLF Mall cut. However, the presence of a Metro line along Anuvrat Marg poses challenges for ramp placement.

"These are preliminary observations. A final decision requires a detailed feasibility study by a consultant," said the official.

He added that the executive engineer of the flyover zone has been instructed to conduct a site visit along with the local MLA, the maintenance team, Delhi Traffic Police, and other stakeholders to assess the project's feasibility.
