Delhi Gymkhana Club has challenged the Central government's order to vacate and hand over its 27.3-acre land in Lutyens' Delhi by June 5 in the Delhi High Court.
Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, on Monday, mentioned the matter before Justice Avneesh Jhingan and told the court that members of the Club have challenged the government's re-entry and resumption order. The High Court accepted the plea to be heard on May 26.

The petition challenges the May 22 order of the LDO, part of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, directing the club to hand over peaceful vacant possession of the historical building at 2, Safdarjung Road.
According to clause 4 of the perpetual lease deed granted to the then Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club Ltd., the centre claimed its right to resume the land "for public purpose." The government described the area as “highly sensitive and strategic”, stating that the land is urgently required for strengthening defence infrastructure, governance facilities and other public-interest projects linked to adjoining government properties.
The order further states that after repossession, the entire 27.3-acre property, including buildings, structures, lawns and fittings, would vest absolutely in the President of India through the LDO.
Following the eviction directive, the Club sought an urgent meeting with government officials and requested that its operations continue “without dislocation” until pending issues are resolved. The Club said it currently serves around 14,000 members and users and supports more than 500 employees.
The Club also informed authorities that it is presently being run by a General Committee appointed by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs pursuant to proceedings before the National Company Law Tribunal, and highlighted improvements in its administration and financial condition in recent years.
