Terminal-1 of Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport is set to be operational by August 17, the GMR, which runs Delhi International Airport, said in an official statement on Wednesday. A canopy had collapsed in June killing one person and injuring a few others at the same terminal. Following the incident, the terminal was later closed for the safety of passengers. Now, the airport has said that the Terminal 1 will be operational from August 17.
Following the closure, IndiGo and SpiceJet had moved their operations to Terminal 2 and 3. The Delhi airport has said that both airlines will now move significant part of their operations to New T1. SpiceJet will operate 13 flights from T1 from August 17 and IndiGo will start its operations with 34 flights from T1 from Sept 2, it added.
It said that the opening of new T1 will reduce pressure from T2 and T3. DIAL added that it worked with IndiGo and SpiceJet to make necessary preparations for shifting of flight operations from T2 and T3 to T1.
Approximately 1,400 flights are operated daily from all three terminals of IGI Airport. The majority of these flights are operated from Terminals 2 and 3. Domestic flights by IndiGo and SpiceJet are operated from Terminal 1.
The canopy of the airport fell after heavy rain lashed the national capital. The incident led to the death of a taxi driver, Ramesh Kumar. 45-year-old Kumar was taken out of a car and crushed under the iron beam. He was pronounced dead upon reaching Gurugram’s Medanta Hospital in June.
