Delhi-Meerut Expressway Phase 5: The long-awaited fifth phase of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway is now expected to face further delays, with officials indicating it won't be operational before March next year. Originally targeted for a December opening, the project has hit a roadblock due to unresolved land acquisition issues, particularly around Lohiyanagar, Khanpur, and Shakarpur.

A key reason for the delay is the stalled construction of a major interchange at Lohiyanagar, part of the Meerut-Hapur-Bulandshahr Highway. According to officials, acquiring land in Shakarpur has proven to be a major challenge. Several shop owners and landholders have refused to vacate, while others have demanded higher compensation and taken their grievances to court.

According to Jagran.com, at the center of the dispute is the Mughal Mahal banquet hall, where owner Haji Sagir has filed a legal case demanding four times the original compensation rate. “If the government pays the amount I’ve requested, I’ll allow construction on my land,” he said.

In Khanpur village, tensions between farmers and the construction company have also stalled work. A representative from the construction firm, speaking anonymously, confirmed that until possession is granted in both Khanpur and Shakarpur, work on the interchange cannot proceed. Even after land is acquired, it would still take about four more months to finish the project.

80 Per Cent of Work Done, Major Structures Already Completed

Despite the setbacks, construction on other parts of the 14.6-km stretch is steadily progressing. The project is being executed by APS Infrastructure Ltd, whose representatives claim that 80 per cent of the work is already completed.

Of the total stretch, 10 km of roadway is fully built, and the remaining 4.6 km has undergone earthwork, with gravel laying now underway. All 10 major underpasses, 12 minor underpasses, and 35 culverts have been fully constructed. Meanwhile, work on the toll plaza near Talheta village is picking up speed. The road around the plaza is done, and construction of buildings and toll booths will begin soon.

Project Manager Krishna Murari of APS Infrastructure confirmed that most of the roadwork is already done. "We’ve completed about 10 kilometers. The only hurdle is getting possession of the remaining land in Khanpur and Shakarpur. Once that’s resolved, we can finish the remaining work within the scheduled timeline," he said.

Travel to Delhi and Haridwar will become significantly faster and smoother, bypassing current chokepoints. A new slip road is also planned at Chudiyala near Mohiuddinpur Road in Kharkhoda, which will provide easier access for residents of Kharkhoda, Naya Gaon, Chandpura, Khandawali, Dhanouta, and Nangla Pattoo who currently have to take longer routes via Partapur or Hapur.
