The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is installing steel railings at all 29 existing interchange stations to enhance crowd control, improve passenger safety, and minimise service disruptions caused by objects falling onto the tracks. Commuters will soon notice these additions at all interchange stations across the Metro network in the national capital.
These interchange stations, where passengers can switch lines without leaving the Metro system, see some of the highest footfall across the network. To improve safety and streamline passenger movement, steel railings are being installed on both up and down platforms to guide commuters behind the safety line and help manage queues during boarding and deboarding.
Number Of Delhi Metro Stations Fitted With Steel Railings
So far, 26 out of the 29 interchange stations developed under Phases I, II, and III of the Delhi Metro have been equipped with these barriers. Installation work is ongoing at the remaining stations, and similar safety measures are also planned for upcoming interchange stations under Phase IV.
According to a DMRC official, the barriers also serve to prevent accidents and deter commuters from getting too close to the platform edge. “They’re part of our ongoing efforts to improve the overall safety experience at metro stations,” said an official, according to the Indian Express report.
Since these stations remain operational throughout the day, installation work is limited to a brief night window of about three hours after Metro services conclude. Officials noted that the installation areas are thoroughly cleaned before the first train begins service the following morning.
The DMRC stated that the steel barriers are being installed alongside other safety features, such as Platform Screen Doors (PSDs), which are being introduced on select lines. These initiatives, it added, are part of a broader strategy to enhance station safety and operational efficiency.
Previously, DMRC has replaced concrete structures with stainless steel railings at five elevated stations on the Pink Line, following the death of a man after a portion of a wall collapsed at Gokulpuri Metro station, officials said on Thursday. A senior DMRC official stated that all elevated stations along the line were inspected, and five stations, Gokulpuri, Jafrabad, Welcome, East Azad Nagar, and Krishna Nagar, were identified for necessary safety upgrades.
"The concrete structure near the platform called parapets installed at all elevated stations of the Pink Line were inspected. We removed the concrete structure from the five stations and replaced it with stainless steel railings," the official said.
Incident Behind The Decision
On February 8, a section of the wall at the elevated Gokulpuri Metro station collapsed, killing a 53-year-old man and injuring four others. The victim, Vinod Kumar Pandey, was riding his scooter to deliver rice when he was struck by falling debris.
Following the incident, the DMRC conducted safety checks across its network, suspended two officials, and launched an inquiry. Waterproofing of drains was carried out where needed to prevent leaks, and regular inspections are now underway. DMRC MD Vikas Kumar said safety measures have been reinforced at all stations. The Pink Line runs from Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar.

"The lifespan of civil structures of the metro is 100 years. We have repaired the safety angle of all the metro stations and some finishing work is to be done. It was a very unfortunate incident and such things should not be repeated. There was some technical issue that led to the incident," Kumar said.
