- Delhi-NCR taxi, auto unions begin 3-day strike.
- Protesting unrevised fares, high fuel costs, app commissions.
- Disruption expected for transport, essential supply chains.
Delhi Taxi, Auto Strike: A three-day transport strike has begun across Delhi-NCR today, May 21. The strike, jointly called by the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) and the Delhi Chalak Shakti Union, is expected to disrupt the movement of taxis, auto-rickshaws, and commercial goods vehicles, raising concerns over commuting difficulties and potential shortages of vegetables and other essential supplies across the national capital and surrounding areas.
Why Are Taxi, Auto Drivers Protesting?
According to union leaders, auto and taxi fares have not been revised for nearly 15 years despite repeated increases in petrol, diesel, and CNG prices. They also claimed that green tax penalties, restrictions on old vehicles, and heavy commissions charged by app-based companies such as Ola and Uber have pushed drivers into financial distress, Jagran.com reported.
Union representatives said the current situation has made it increasingly difficult for drivers to manage household expenses and continue operations profitably.
Taxi, Auto Unions' 3-Day Strike To Affect THESE Services
- The three-day strike is expected to affect taxis, app-based cabs (Ola and Uber) and auto-rickshaw services across Delhi-NCR. However, the scale of the disruption remains uncertain as not all transport unions have confirmed their participation, News18 reported.
- Apart from passenger transport, good transporters have announced 'Chakka Jam' between May 21 and 23. This is expected to impact the supply chain for vegetables, fruits, groceries and other daily essentials entering Delhi-NCR markets.
Advisory For Residents
- Commuters are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and make maximum use of Metro and DTC bus services, which are expected to operate normally.
- Prefer carpooling with friends, family members, or colleagues.
- Opt for work-from-home facilities, if possible.
- Stock up on milk, vegetables, groceries, and essential medicines in advance to avoid inconvenience during the three-day strike.
