Delhi:  In a major move to reduce traffic snarls on key arterial roads, such as Ring Road, Kalindi Kunj, and Sarai Kale Khan, the National Highways Authority of India is planning to develop the eastern arm of the Urban Extension Road (UER-II) or Delhi’s Third Ring Road. The Centre aims to complement the UER-II by diverting traffic through northeast Delhi into Ghaziabad and ultimately Noida.

The UER-II is likely to be fully operational by August. Once UER-II is completely operational, it will reduce travel time between the Indira Gandhi International Airport and parts of southwest and northwest Delhi.

Delhi’s Third Ring Road: Details About The Project

The first 17 km leg of the UER-II connecting Delhi-Dehradun Expressway near Tronica City is expected to cost approximately Rs 3,350 crore. The second leg, which is expected to be 65 km in length, will approximately cost Rs 7,500 crore. It will run from Mandaula to Noida via Ghaziabad, skirting towns such as Ghitora, Farukhnagar, Hidan and Indirapuram.

‘The second leg will act as a high-speed bypass for vehicles travelling between Ghaziabad and Noida and parts of Delhi, reducing traffic on corridors such as Kalindi Kunj, Sarai Kale Khan and Delhi-Meerut Expressway,” the NHAI report stated.

The two highway segments of UER-II will be 82 km in length and are likely to cost Rs 10,850 crore. The officials said that the detailed project reports (DPR) of both segments are currently being evaluated and will be awarded soon.

“The new six-lane highway will begin at Alipur in North Delhi—currently the northern endpoint of UER-II—and run through Tronica City in Ghaziabad, connecting to the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway near Mandaula. From there, it will wind through Ghitora and Farukhnagar, link up with the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, and end along the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway,” according to reports accessed by Hindustan Times.

Once the eastern arm of the UER-II is operational, it will offer seamless connectivity across Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. It will serve both local and out-of-town commuters from southern and eastern Delhi. It will provide direct access to the north without vehicles entering the choked routes.
