In a significant move, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) announced on Friday that old vehicles will be denied fuel from July 1 in Delhi. To enforce this decision, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras have been installed at all 520 petrol pumps across the city. These cameras will identify non-compliant vehicles by connecting to a central database.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) directed on April 7, 2015, that diesel vehicles over 10 years old and petrol vehicles over 15 years old shall not operate in the National Capital Region (NCR). The Supreme Court ratified this order on October 29, 2018, reinforcing the ban on these vehicles plying in the NCR.

The CAQM further revealed that this system will be rolled out in five districts of the National Capital Region (NCR), namely, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar and Sonipat, from November 1. Moreover, the entire NCR will come under the purview of this system from April 1, 2026. Not only will old vehicles be denied fuel, but authorities will also seize them and send them to scrap yards.
