Delhi’s air quality has again turned toxic with the Air Quality Index (AQI) registering in the severe category by surpassing the 400 mark in many areas. Besides, a thick layer of fog has shrouded the national capital, adding to the woes of the people. As per the latest data of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI in Delhi’s Anand Vihar and Dwarka was registered at 426. In Jahangirpuri, the AQI was recorded at 400.
Moreover, the air quality could further worsen if people decide to burst crackers on New Year’s Eve.

As per the IMD, Delhi’s air quality was poor due to low day temperature during the day. “Low temperatures and reduced wind speeds lead to a stagnation of the atmosphere. With almost no sunlight penetrating even during the daytime, wind speeds stayed low, not allowing pollutants to disperse,” the official said, quoted by HT.
The Centre’s Early Warning System (EWS) said the conditions are expected to prevail till January 2 as weather conditions are not favourable for effective dispersion of pollutants. “Delhi’s air quality is likely to remain in the ‘very poor’ category from December 31 till January 2. As weather conditions are not favourable for effective dispersion of pollutants, emissions from firecrackers if burnt on December 31, may deteriorate air quality,” the forecast revealed.
As per the CPCB, AQI between 0-50 falls under “good” category, between 51 and 100 as “satisfactory”, between 101 and 200 as “moderate”, between 201 and 300 as “poor”, between 301 and 400 as “very poor”, and over 400 as “severe”.
