Delhi Rains Disrupt Travel: Heavy rains lashed the Delhi-NCR region on Wednesday, leading to widespread waterlogging and severe traffic congestion particularly on routes leading to the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. In light of these disruptions, airport authorities have issued an advisory urging passengers to stay updated on their flight schedules and consider alternate routes to avoid delays.

In a post on X, the airport authority stated, "Due to adverse weather, flight operations at Delhi Airport are experiencing disruptions. Passengers in the terminal are kindly asked to remain patient and cooperative as we work with all stakeholders to minimize any operational impact. For the latest flight information, please contact your airline directly. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding."

Another advisory issued at 9:21 PM added, "As per the Indian Meteorological Department's forecast, Delhi is experiencing inclement weather conditions. Our on-ground teams are working diligently with all stakeholders to ensure your journey remains hassle-free. Passengers are advised to consider alternative modes of transport, including Delhi Metro, to reach the airport and avoid potential delays. For the latest flight information, passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines."

Flight Operations: Running but Vulnerable

While flight operations at IGI Airport are currently normal, authorities have cautioned that deteriorating weather conditions may trigger delays. Ground teams are working closely with airline partners and other staff to manage the situation efficiently and minimise passenger inconvenience.

Advice for Passengers

Travellers heading to IGI Airport are strongly encouraged to plan their journey in advance. Authorities recommend using the Delhi Metro as a faster and more reliable option amidst road flooding and traffic jams. Several airlines, including SpiceJet, have already issued alerts about possible disruptions to their flight schedules due to the rain.

Weather Forecast: More Rain Ahead In Delhi-NCR

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is expected to continue through the night and into Thursday. The prolonged wet spell may further impact airport operations and commuter movement.

Adding to the weather-related strain, IGI Airport is already operating under reduced capacity because of the ongoing closure of runway RW 10/28 for upgrade works, which will continue until September 15. This has resulted in the cancellation of 114 daily flights and schedule changes for several others.

What Travellers Should Do?

  • Double-check flight status before heading to the airport

  • Prefer Delhi Metro over road travel to avoid waterlogged areas
  • Stay connected with airlines and the airport’s official updates

As the weather remains unpredictable, passengers are urged to stay alert and flexible with their travel plans to avoid last-minute hassles.
