Heavy rains, accompanied by strong winds, have brought respite from the scorching heat on Sunday morning. Besides, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for a severe storm and strong winds in Delhi-NCR over the next few hours.
The temperature in Delhi had risen above 41 degrees Celsius on Saturday evening. The weather department had forecasted strong winds and thunderstorms with light rain during the evening or night and had issued an orange alert. However, until 8:30 PM, there had been no sign of rain, and the sweltering heat persisted.
The IMD has issued an alert for a severe storm and strong winds in the city, advising residents to stay indoors.
According to IMD, there was moderate to intense rainfall with thunder and lightning in the morning, accompanied by winds blowing at speeds of 80–100 km/h. In several areas, trees were uprooted and fell on roads.
Hailstorms were reported in Safdarjung along with showers accompanied by thunder. IMD stated that winds blew at a speed of 82 km/h in the first storm, while in the second storm, wind speeds reached a maximum of 104 km/h. The weather department has urged residents to exercise caution. The IMD advisory has recommended that people stay indoors and avoid travel unless necessary.
However, the strong winds and rain disrupted traffic in the morning, and several low-lying areas reported waterlogging.
According to the weather department, the maximum temperature in Delhi on Saturday was recorded at 41.8°C, which is 1.9°C above normal. However, the heat felt much higher than the actual temperature. The heat index in Delhi at 8 pm was 51.8°C. The minimum temperature was recorded at 29.6°C, which is 1.6°C above normal. Aya Nagar recorded the highest temperature at 42.2°C, making it the hottest area in Delhi.
