In response to the ongoing severe cold weather conditions in Delhi, authorities have decided to keep schools closed for the next five days for students from Nursery to Class 5, as said by Education Minister Atishi on Sunday.

The announcement follows the Delhi government's retraction of an earlier order extending the winter vacation in schools within the national capital. The initial directive, issued by the Directorate of Education on Saturday, declared an extension of the winter break for all government and private schools in Delhi until January 10 due to cold weather conditions.

However, the decision was reversed, with a Delhi government official citing an error in the order. The updated directive from the Directorate of Education clarified the situation, stating, "Order No.DE.23(3)/Sch.Br./2024/18 dated: January 6, 2024, regarding the extension of Winter Vacation stands withdrawn with immediate effect. Further orders in this regard may be issued in due course."

Simultaneously, the Gautam Buddh Nagar administration issued an order on Saturday, directing all schools in Noida and Greater Noida to observe holidays for students up to Class 8 until January 14. This decision is in response to the prevalent dense fog and cold weather conditions in the region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts the persistence of cold to severe cold conditions in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, with a decrease expected thereafter. Maximum temperatures in many parts of Punjab and Haryana are currently in the range of 9-12 degrees Celsius, while in north Rajasthan, Delhi, northwest Madhya Pradesh, and some parts of Uttar Pradesh, temperatures hover between 13-16 degrees Celsius. These temperatures are below normal by 4-9 degrees Celsius in these areas.

IMD anticipates northwest and central India to experience a fresh spell of rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and hailstorms between Monday and Wednesday.
