In a bid to ease traffic congestion and reduce jam scenarios, the Delhi government is set to implement a state-of-the-art "Intelligent Traffic Management System" (ITMS). The full implementation of the system is likely to take nearly three years, and preparations have started for the same.
According to a senior traffic police officer, the project has been approved by the Union Home Ministry, and work on it will begin as soon as it is passed by the Cabinet.
What is an Intelligent Traffic Management System?
ITMS is an advanced technology-based traffic system that relies on artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to ensure safe and orderly traffic on roads.
The system conducts real-time traffic monitoring, using smart cameras and sensors installed on roads. This equipment will measure vehicle traffic, automatically determining traffic signal timings. The aim is to eliminate unnecessary stops at intersections.
The system will also instantly read the license plates of vehicles speeding or jumping red lights and automatically generate challans.

All traffic data will go live in the command room for real-time analysis, allowing ambulances or police to be dispatched immediately to the scene in the event of an accident. Furthermore, this technology will also respond quickly to create a green corridor for ambulances.
Pace of 'Operation Sangam' is slowing down!
In February, at the Lieutenant Governor's direction, the traffic police launched a community policing initiative called "Operation Sangam" to relieve Delhi's traffic congestion. Under this initiative, they are meeting with RWA and market association officials and acting on their suggestions.
However, this campaign doesn't appear to be as effective on the ground as expected. Only time will tell how successful this effort will be.
50 Variable Message Sign (VMS) boards upgraded
To strengthen smart traffic management, the traffic police have begun upgrading the variable message signboards installed at major intersections. So far, 50 of the 92 boards have been upgraded. Currently, only alert drivers are able to avoid traffic jams.

These upgraded VMS boards are being integrated with an "Advanced Traffic Monitoring and Control System." This provides drivers with live, on-the-road information (dynamic travel advisories) about real-time traffic congestion, route diversions, accident warnings, weather conditions, and estimated travel times. This allows people to plan their journeys more effectively by choosing alternative routes.
Experts and officials believe that despite these initial steps, truly improving Delhi's traffic system will remain a major challenge until the "Intelligent Traffic Management System" is fully implemented in the capital.
