The Delhi Transport Department will soon begin strict enforcement against vehicles that lack colour-code stickers indicating their fuel type, officials announced on Sunday. A public notice stated that failure to comply will result in penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act. These stickers are a component of the High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) system, which was introduced in 2012-13 and made mandatory for all vehicles by 2019.

"The Motor Vehicles (High Security Registration Plates) order, 2018 for displaying colour-coded stickers/third registration mark on the windshield of the vehicle. Non-compliance with the above order will also attract the provisions of Section 192(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988," said the public notice issued by the department on Sunday.
Section 192(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act outlines the penalties for individuals who drive, or permit someone else to drive, a motor vehicle in violation of Section 39, which pertains to the requirement of vehicle registration.
"The vehicle owners are advised to ensure strict compliance with the aforesaid order," the notice said further.
In 2020, the transport department initiated a special campaign to crack down on violations related to High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP). As part of this drive, vehicles found without HSRPs or with stickers on their number plates faced a fine of Rs 5,000.

High-Security Registration Plates (HSRPs) were introduced in 2012–13 and became mandatory for all new vehicles from April 2019. The government also required all older vehicles in Delhi to have HSRPs installed. Color-coded stickers are used to identify fuel types: orange for diesel vehicles, light blue for petrol and CNG, and grey for all other types, according to officials.
Vehicle owners who will not follow the order will not get Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificates.
