Mumbai Metro: Cidco is nearing completion of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Metro Line 8, also known as the Gold Line. This new metro line will link Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). It will facilitate interchange connectivity with various existing and planned metro lines throughout the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The proposed 34.9-kilometre corridor is set to cost approximately Rs 20,000 crore and will be constructed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Once the DPR is submitted to the state government, Cidco plans to issue tenders, with the bidding expected to wrap up by the end of this year. The line is anticipated to be operational by 2029.

Mumbai Metro Golden Line Route

Starting at CSMIA Terminal 2, the Gold Line will run underground until it reaches Chheda Nagar, after which it will rise above ground along the Sion-Panvel Highway. This adjustment replaces the earlier plan to route the line via Palm Beach Road.

Vijay Singhal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Cidco, stated that the alignment will enhance multimodal connectivity, linking metro services with both suburban and long-distance trains at key locations like Kurla and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT). The metro will also serve important residential and commercial areas in Mankhurd, Vashi, Nerul and Belapur, providing a vital east-west transit link between the two international airports.

Metro Line 8 Will Interchange With Seven Other Metro Corridors

In addition to its airport connection, Metro Line 8 will interchange with seven other metro corridors in the MMR, facilitating seamless travel across the region. Singhal emphasised that this metro line will offer a reliable transport option for air passengers, particularly those on tight schedules, while also reducing traffic congestion on major roads like the Eastern Express Highway and Sion-Panvel Highway.
