Delhi-Varanasi High-Speed Rail Corridor: After Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman mentioned the Delhi-Varanasi high-speed rail corridor during her budget speech on Sunday, one of India's most ambitious train projects has received a fresh momentum.
The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) will now initiate the process of preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this corridor. To ensure precision in land surveying, the agency will employ advanced Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology for aerial surveys.
According to officials, LiDAR provides highly accurate data on terrain elevations, structures, vegetation, and other geo-morphological features through airborne scanning. This will enable a more precise DPR, accelerate planning and design, and enhance transparency in high-speed rail projects.
Delhi-Varanasi High Speed Rail Corridor
The Delhi-Varanasi corridor is one of the proposed high-speed rail networks in the country. Spanning approximately 865 km, the route will start from Delhi and pass through Mathura, Agra, Etawah, Lucknow, Raebareli, Prayagraj, Bhadohi, before terminating in Varanasi. The bullet train will traverse 60 villages in the Raebareli district alone.
Once operational, the corridor will reduce travel time between Delhi and Varanasi to just four to four-and-a-half hours, compared to the current eight to ten hours by conventional train or road. This transformation is expected to boost tourism, trade, and create new employment and investment opportunities across several districts in Uttar Pradesh.
The work on the project was pushed for several reasons after the survey began in 2016-2017, but following the Budget announcement, the survey will now resume using LiDAR technology in coordination with the revenue department.
As per the Divisional Railway Manager, Lucknow, Sunil Kumar Verma, the high-speed train will operate at speeds exceeding 350 km per hour.
