Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has unveiled a series of significant announcements for Uttar Pradesh in the Union Budget 2026-27. The state is set to receive a massive infrastructure boost with a total of 1,500 kilometers of high-speed rail corridors, including the Varanasi-Siliguri and Delhi-Varanasi routes.

Beyond transportation, the budget allocates a special fund of Rs 10,000 crore for the state, plans for girls' hostels in all 75 districts, and a major focus on the beautification of pilgrimage sites.

A New Era Of Rail Connectivity

The construction of these rail corridors will dramatically improve connectivity between North and Northeast India. Key cities across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal will be linked via a high-speed, modern rail network. This will reduce travel time and significantly enhance passenger amenities. Access to religious, educational and commercial hubs like Varanasi, Prayagraj, Patna and Siliguri will become much smoother.

World-Class Infrastructure And Stations

With increased capital expenditure for the railways, this project will include:

Modernisation: Construction of new lines, track doubling, tripling and full electrification.

Technology: Implementation of advanced signaling systems and world-class station redevelopment.

Logistics: Development of Multi-modal Logistic Parks and freight terminals to make goods transport faster and more affordable.

This project is particularly beneficial for Varanasi. By combining improved rail links with budget provisions for heritage conservation and One District One Product (ODOP) promotion, Kashi’s trade and tourism are expected to reach new heights, creating vast employment opportunities for local youth. Similarly, Siliguri—the gateway to the Northeast, will see a boost in its tea industry and border trade.

Empowering Women And Youth

In a move toward social and educational upliftment, the Central Government has announced the construction of one girls' hostel in each of the 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh. This initiative will provide safe and convenient accommodation for students and working women coming from remote areas.

Political Reactions: CM Yogi Vs. Akhilesh Yadav

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath praised the budget as one filled with hope and ambition. He stated that it would play a pivotal role in accelerating the national economy, with a special emphasis on health services, AYUSH and creating growth opportunities for the youth.

In contrast, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav criticised the budget, calling it "beyond comprehension" and a mere attempt to "sell dreams." He remarked that it is futile to expect new results from those who failed to fulfill previous promises, adding that when there is no hope left in the BJP, there is none in their budget either.
