Delhi experienced a sudden drop in temperature due to cold winds sweeping through the city. On Saturday, the minimum temperature fell by 5.4 degrees C, while the maximum temperature dipped by 2.7 degrees C.
According to the Meteorological Department, these cool winds will continue for the next couple of days, offering some respite. However, from Sunday onwards, temperatures are expected to climb again, leading to scorching heat in the coming days.
Why Did the Temperature Drop?
The sudden dip in temperature is due to light rain and snowfall in Jammu & Kashmir, along with chilly northwesterly winds sweeping across northern India. On Saturday, Delhi saw one of its coldest mornings in late March in the past 15 years. The maximum temperature also dropped to three degrees below normal, making the weather more pleasant for a brief period.
Temperature Forecast for the Coming Days
As per the weather forecast, Delhi will experience clear skies on Sunday. The temperatures are expected to be:
- Sunday: Maximum 32 degrees C, Minimum 16 degrees C
- Monday: Maximum 35 degrees C, Minimum 17 degrees C
Delhi's Temperature Hits 38.9 degrees C
The capital has been experiencing intense heat since mid-March. On 26th March, Delhi recorded its highest temperature of 38.9 degrees C, making it one of the hottest days of the month. However, after nearly two weeks, the temperature finally dipped below 30 degrees C on Saturday, with a minimum of 15.5 degrees C—2.6 degrees C below normal.
Colder Mornings in Some Parts of Delhi
Certain parts of Delhi, especially the Ridge area, recorded much lower temperatures than usual. Here are some notable readings:
- Ridge Area: Minimum 10.2 degrees C (9.4 degrees C below normal)
- Najafgarh: Minimum 12.4 degrees C
- Palam: Minimum 13 degrees C
- Aya Nagar: Minimum 13.5 degrees C
The maximum temperature in these regions remained around 30 degrees C.
Coldest Late-March Morning in 15 Years
Historical data suggests that the last three to four days of March rarely witness temperatures below 16 degrees C. The last instance of such low temperatures was on 28th April 2023, when the minimum dropped to 15.3 degrees C. In the past 15 years, late March temperatures have occasionally fallen close to this mark:
- 29th March 2020: Minimum 15.6 degrees C
- 30th March 2013: Minimum 15.7 degrees C
This year’s minimum temperature has been even lower, making it an unusual weather pattern for this time of the year.
Rainfall In North India
According to senior meteorologist Krishna Mishra, a western disturbance is responsible for this sudden change in weather. Light rain was recorded in most parts of Jammu & Kashmir on Friday, along with snowfall in higher regions. Parts of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab also experienced light showers, which contributed to the cooling effect. Additionally, since Friday evening, the Ganga plains have seen lower air pressure, further influencing Delhi's climate.
While Delhi is currently enjoying a brief break from the heat, this relief won’t last long. From Sunday onwards, temperatures are set to rise, making summer conditions more intense.
