Delhi Weather: A blanket of toxic smog continued to choke the national capital on Tuesday, with the air quality deteriorating further and plunging into the ‘Very Poor’ category. The worsening air quality comes as temperatures continue to drop, with the city bracing for a cold wave.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold wave alert for the national capital from December 3-6. Officials warn that the situation is likely to worsen in the next 48 hours as intensified fog and slower wind speeds trap pollution near the surface, further reducing visibility and pushing pollution levels higher, news agency PTI reported.

Smog Likely To Thicken

According to meteorologists, the combination of calm, north-westerly air movement with low temperatures and fog creates the ideal atmospheric conditions for smog to accumulate. As a result, residents will continue to experience poor visibility, pungent air, and potential breathing discomfort throughout the week, particularly during the early morning and late-night hours.
