Delhi Rain: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has put Delhi on a yellow alert till 7.24 pm as heavy rain lashed parts of national capital on Wednesday. The IMD has also issued orange alerts in Ghaziabad and Noida while Gurugram and Faridabad have been kept under a red alert. As Yamuna continues to swell, the river is expected to cross the 207.40 metre mark by 8 pm today, September 3, according to the forecast by the Central Water Commission. 

Delhi Rain Updates

-In Delhi, the Yamuna River’s water level reached 207 metres at 1 pm, raising serious concerns as water entered homes and shops. This is the fifth time Yamuna has breached the 207-metre mark in almost six decades since 1963, according to the data available with Irrigation and Flood Control Department.

-Yamuna crossed the 207-metre mark in 2023 (208.66m), 2013 (207.32m), 2010 (207.11m), and 1978 (207.49m).

-Cremations at Delhi's largest cremation ground Nigambodh Ghat were suspended after Yamuna flooded the area, reported news agency PTI.  The ghat handles 55 to 60 cremations daily. The ghat was operational till 2.30 pm but no further cremations were conducted thereafter.

-People staying around Yamuna were moved to safer locations amid rising water levels. The Old Railway Bridge has also been shut for traffic on Wednesday.

-Amid incessant showers in Delhi, people were evacuated from the Monastery Market near Kashmere Gate, Vasudev Ghat, Majnu ka Tila, and the Yamuna Bazaar.

-According to the IMD, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by light thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty winds speeding upto 30-40 kmph is very likely to occur in Delhi, the entire national capital region (NCR), and also parts of Haryana and Punjab.

-The IMD forecast for today mentioned "generally cloudy sky with moderate rain", "thunderstorm with rain" for tomorrow, "generally cloudy sky with moderate rain" for September 5, "thunderstorm with rain" for September 6, and "generally cloudy sky" for September 7 and 8.

North India Weather Update

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Uttarakhand from September 3-9; Haryana, Chandigarh on September 4 and 9; West Uttar Pradesh on September 3; West Rajasthan on September 5 and 8; East Rajasthan on September 6 with isolated very heavy rainfall very likely over Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh on September 3; East Rajasthan from September 3-5; West Rajasthan on September 6 and 7, IMD stated in its bulletin on Wednesday.
