Delhi-Meerut RRTS Update: The Namo Bharat Train, operating on the Delhi-Meerut corridor, has become the fastest train in India, running at 160 kmph. The train originates from Sarai Kale Khan, Nizamuddin in Delhi, and concludes at Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut.

Currently, the operational section of the Delhi-Meerut corridor stretches from New Ashok Nagar in East Delhi to Meerut South in Uttar Pradesh, covering 55 km of the total 82.15-km corridor. Eventually, the entire stretch is expected to be opened to the public soon.

Earlier, the record for the fastest train was held by Gatiman Express, which was launched in 2016. It was the country’s first semi-high speed train running at 160 kmph between Hazrat Nizamuddin and Agra on the specially-laid tracks. Later, India’s special series train, Vande Bharat Express, was also launched at the same speed.

However, due to unspecified reasons, the Indian Railway reduced the speed of these trains to 130 kmph. Currently, all the trains of Indian Railways operate under the upper threshold limit of 130 kmph.

Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat Train:

Thirty trainsets of Namo Bharat (each having 6 coaches) are running between New Ashok Nagar (New Delhi) and Meerut South (Uttar Pradesh). Each train runs with a 10-minute inter-station frequency, which makes these trains accessible to the masses. Each train touches a speed of 160 kmph for a few seconds between some of the 11 stations on the route.

"The entire 82.15 km long corridor with 16 stations, starting from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh, is likely to be commissioned soon," said officials of the National Capital Regional Transport Corporation Limited (NCRTL), as quoted by PTI.

NCRTC is a joint venture between the Government of India (50 per cent) and the state governments of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan (12.5 per cent each). The opening of the Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat Train has greatly reduced the time for the commuters, with certain stretches like the journey from Delhi to Meerut South taking as long as 30 minutes to travel.
