Delhi-NCR Weather: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Delhi and the NCR region, predicting a five-day spell of thunderstorms, gusty winds, and light rain from 18 to 23 May. While this weather will bring relief from the intense summer heat, it may also lead to disruptions in daily life.
On Saturday, a sudden dust storm and rainfall hit parts of Delhi-NCR, causing widespread damage. Wind speeds reached up to 74 km/h, uprooting trees and damaging infrastructure in several areas. The strong winds led to severe traffic congestion throughout the city. Tragically, three people lost their lives in two separate storm-related incidents. In New Ashok Nagar, the roof of the Namo Bharat Station was blown off, forcing authorities to suspend rail services temporarily.
The IMD has warned of more rain and strong winds over the coming days. For 18 May, Delhi is expected to see cloudy skies with light showers or thunderstorms by afternoon and evening. Wind speeds may range between 15–25 km/h, increasing to 35 km/h during stormy conditions.
On 19th and May 20, the weather is likely to remain unstable with partly cloudy skies, light rain, and stronger winds of 30–40 km/h, potentially reaching up to 50 km/h during storms. Daytime temperatures are expected to range between 38–40 degrees C, while nighttime temperatures may stay around 27–29 degrees C.
From 21st to May 23, the IMD forecasts similar weather conditions. Light rain and strong winds are expected to continue, with wind speeds ranging from 30–40 km/h, occasionally touching 50 km/h. The maximum temperature during this period is likely to be between 37–40 degrees C, while the minimum may vary between 26–29 degrees C.
Neighbouring areas like Noida, Ghaziabad, Greater Noida, Faridabad, and Gurugram are also expected to experience similar weather patterns throughout the week. While the showers will provide temporary relief from the heat, the strong winds may cause issues such as fallen trees, traffic delays, and transport interruptions.
For Sunday, the IMD has also predicted light rain with thunderstorms. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 42 degrees C and 28 degrees C, respectively. Residents are advised to stay cautious and follow local weather updates.
