Delhi-NCR Weather: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted light fog over the sky of the national capital in the morning from October 16th to October 21st. According to the weather department, Thursday night will be the coldest, with temperatures dropping as low as 16 degrees Celsius, which means a chilly night for the residents.

Gusty northwest winds reaching up to 10 km/hr are expected in the national capital in the afternoon. Post afternoon, winds are expected to settle at 5 km/hr from the northeast direction, which is expected to keep the fog blanket intact over the sky. With the onset of cold, the AQI levels are also dropping in the national capital.

AQI Worsens In Delhi-NCR

The Air Quality Index stood at 210 at 4:45 AM on Thursday, continuing with the ‘poor’ category mark. On Wednesday, the air quality was recorded in the "poor" category for the second consecutive day, with some areas crossing 300 and reaching the "very poor" category. 

Meanwhile, the Air Quality Index in Noida also worsened, with some areas breaching the 300 mark of the ‘very poor’ category. Visibility was poor today, with a layer of smog hanging over the region. Currently, the AQI stands at 220 at 7 AM in Noida. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) noted high concentrations of PM 2.5 and PM 10 near the Noida expressway and seven sectors. Officials forecast a worsening situation as winter approaches.

The air quality in Greater Noida also deteriorated on Wednesday, moving from the moderate to the poor category. The AQI increased from 194 to 263, surpassing the 200-mark. Currently, the AQI levels in Greater Noida have come down to 210.

CAQM Implements GRAP Stage I

In response to the deteriorating air quality, the Central Air Quality Management implemented the Graded Action Plan (GRAP) Stage I. GRAP is a set of emergency measures aimed at preventing further deterioration of air quality across the Delhi-NCR region. Manual sweeping was done in many sectoral roads to prevent the accumulation of dust in many construction.

S.P. Singh, the General Manager of the Noida Authority, stated that teams are now active across the city to enforce compliance with the Stage 1 measures. "To combat pollution, 20 tankers are sprinkling treated water from sewage treatment plants over 63 km of roads, while 12 mechanical sweepers are cleaning 340 km of road stretches,” added SP Singh, quoted the Times of India.
