The Centre has instructed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to complete the construction of the Delhi-Saharanpur Highway within Delhi NCR’s borders by the end of February next year. This highway, which is part of the Bharatmala project, will be 150 kilometres long and will have six main lanes and six service lanes. It is estimated that 1.50 lakh vehicles will use this highway daily.
The highway (709B) will start from NH 9 near Delhi’s Akshardham Temple and end at the Uttar Pradesh Border (Loni) via Geeta Colony, New Usmanpur, Shastri Park and Khajuri Khas.
The Delhi-Saharanpur Highway will have an elevated section of 6.58 kilometres, four underpasses, seven-foot over bridges and 41 bus shelters. The cost of the project is around Rs 1,100 crore.
The original target for the completion of the highway was December 2024, but it was later advanced to March 2024. Now, the deadline has been further reduced to February 2024, before the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. NHAI officials said that they are preparing a strategy to meet this challenging task and will employ more workers and machinery.
The Delhi-Saharanpur Highway will also have CCTV cameras and digital display boards to enforce traffic rules and warn the drivers. The speed limit for cars will be 70 and for heavy vehicles, the speed limit will be 50 kilometres per hour.
