Digital Census 2027: West Bengal is set to conduct its first-ever digital Census, allowing citizens to self-enumerate online before officials visit their homes for verification. The self-enumeration phase will be held from August 1 to August 15, during which residents can log in to the official Census portal and submit their personal and household details.
How the Self-Enumeration Process Works:
- To complete the online Census, users will need to select their state
- Enter the CAPTCHA
- Provide the name of the head of the household.
- Verification will then be carried out using an OTP sent to the registered mobile number or email address.
Citizens will also be required to pin the exact location of their residence on a digital map and fill in details such as the district, PIN code, and locality. Once all information is submitted, the system will generate a unique identification number, which must be presented to Census enumerators during the verification process.
Door-to-Door Verification From August 16
After the online registration window closes, enumerators will conduct door-to-door verification between August 16 and September 14.
During this stage, officials will verify information related to the household, including housing conditions, drinking water supply, sanitation facilities, electricity, internet connectivity, and other basic amenities, along with property-related details.
Second Phase Scheduled For February
The second phase of the Census, scheduled for February next year, will focus on collecting detailed demographic information about every member of the household. To facilitate the exercise in Kolkata, authorities have divided the city into 8,112 enumeration blocks, with specially trained teams assigned to each block.
Officials say the introduction of a digital Census system is expected to improve transparency, minimise errors, and enhance the accuracy of data collection.
