DRDO News: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Wednesday handed over to the Indian Navy an indigenously developed system capable of obscuring radar signals and creating a microwave shield around platforms and assets to reduce radar detection, the Ministry of Defence said. Known as chaff rockets, the technology, described as a niche one by the ministry, is used to deploy a radar countermeasure wherein a microwave obscurant cloud is created over a space to reflect radar signals.
The newly unveiled military platform, called the Medium Range-Microwave Obscurant Chaff Rocket (MR-MOCR), has been developed by DRDO's Jodhpur-based Defence Laboratory, the ministry informed. At a ceremony held in New Delhi, DRDO Chairman Samir Kamat handed over the MR-MOCR to the Director General of Naval Armament Inspection, Rear Admiral Brijesh Vashistha.
DRDO Projects: MR-MOCR's Functioning
At the core of the MR-MOCR rocket's functioning, lies a special type of fibre that has diameters of only a few microns and a unique microwave obscuration property, the Defence Ministry's communique suggests.
"The rocket, when fired, forms microwave obscurant cloud in space spreading over a sufficient area, with adequate persistence time, thus creating an effective shield against hostile threats having radio frequency seekers," the PIB release said.
Indian Navy Held Trials
The first phase of trials of the MR-MOCR was successfully conducted with launches from Indian Navy ships, the government said, adding that the trial achieved the successful demonstration of MOC cloud blooming, which was "persistent in space".
"In Phase-II trials, the Radar Cross Section (RCS) reduction of an aerial target to the extent of 90 per cent has been demonstrated and cleared by the Indian Navy. The number of MR-MOCR, meeting all the qualification requirements, have been successfully handed over to the Indian Navy," the Defence Ministry stated.
DRDO, Indian Navy Get Defence Minister's Praise
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has complimented the DRDO and the Indian Navy on the successful development of MR-MOCR, the ministry said. "He termed the MOC technology as another step towards achieving Aatmanirbharta in defence," it added.
