e-Passport rules India: The e-passport has now been launched in the country. Since this is a relatively new concept, there is considerable confusion among people regarding it. For instance, those who hold old passports that have not yet expired are wondering if such passports will become invalid.

An electronic chip will now be embedded in the passport. This chip will contain all the information about the individual. It is this chip that transforms a regular passport into an e-passport.

Will Old Passport Become Invalid?

Your existing regular passport will not become invalid until it expires. Once your current regular passport expires, it will become invalid. After that, you will need to obtain a new e-passport.

How Different Is e-Passport From Regular One?

In terms of appearance, the e-passport will feature an embedded chip. Having an e-passport does not mean you can access it on your phone like an e-Aadhaar. You will still need to carry the passport booklet with you, just as before. The passport booklet will have pages similar to the earlier version.

The chip is being added to the e-passport so that basic information about the individual can be easily obtained by scanning it.

Which Documents Are Required For An E-Passport?

To apply for an e-passport, you will need to submit certain documents as proof:

Identity Proof

- Aadhaar Card
-  PAN Card
- Voter ID Card

Proof of Address

- Electricity Bill

Proof of Date of Birth

- Birth Certificate

Step-By-Step Process To Apply e-Passport

Step 1 — First, visit the official passport website.

Step 2 — If you have not registered yet, you need to register first. Existing users can log in directly.

Step 3 — After that, fill in the required information in the form and submit the documents. Then, schedule an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra or post office.

Step 4 — Visit the Passport Seva Kendra where documents will be verified. Finally, your passport will be delivered to your home.
