A mild earthquake shook the Delhi-NCR region early on Monday morning, leaving residents startled as the tremors rattled homes and offices. Lasting only a few seconds, the quake prompted many people to quickly leave their homes and workplaces as a safety measure.

The National Center for Seismology reported that the earthquake, measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale, hit on 17 February 2025 at 5:36 AM IST. The epicentre was located in New Delhi at a depth of 5 km, with coordinates 28.59°N latitude and 77.16°E longitude.

While the tremors were felt in both residential and commercial areas, no significant damage or injuries have been reported. Residents took to social media to share their experiences, posting videos of shaking ceiling fans and other objects in their homes.

The earthquake sparked a flurry of reactions online, with many sharing their thoughts on social media platforms like X (formerly known as Twitter). Some expressed fear, while others used humour to lighten the situation.

One netizen, speaking with ANI, shared their experience at New Delhi railway station: "I was in the waiting lounge when everyone rushed out. It felt like a bridge or something had collapsed."

A Ghaziabad resident said, "The tremors were so strong. I’ve never experienced anything like this before. The whole building was shaking."

A passenger waiting for a train in New Delhi said, "It didn’t last long, but the intensity was so high. It felt like a train was speeding by."

Social media was flooded with mixed reactions. One user wrote, "Shallow earthquakes are scary. That rumbling sound was terrifying! Woke up to my door shaking, and I had just gone to sleep at 5 AM! #earthquake."

Another user shared a video of the ceiling fan swaying due to the quake, while one more tweeted, "The earthquake was brief, but the thunderous sound was frightening. What a strange way to start the day and week."

Many others shared their thoughts on the event, including one who remarked, "It was a loud reminder that nature can hit us anytime without warning."

Others added, "It didn’t feel like a typical earthquake" and "It’s massive when it pulls you out of bed."
