An elderly woman lost her life due to sunstroke in Kerala's Palakkad district amid the extreme heat conditions in the southern state. In Elappully village, a 90-year-old woman was found dead in a canal on Sunday, according to a Palakkad district health officer. The deceased, who was also a dementia patient, had suffered a sunstroke after venturing out of her home.

According to the health officials, her post-mortem revealed burn injuries over her body, confirming sunstroke. This comes a week after a man was found dead with burn injuries in the district. Taking cognisance of the incident, the health officials advised people not to step out of their homes between 11 AM and 3 PM.

In view of the increasing temperature in Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a maximum temperature warning for 12 districts over the next five days. The Women and Child Development Department has also suspended preschool activities in anganwadis for a week.

The agencies further said that these districts will experience hot and humid weather conditions, excluding hilly areas, from April 28 to May 2, due to elevated temperatures and humidity levels.

According to the authorities, there's a risk that heatwave conditions will develop in one or two locations in the Kollam, Palakkad, and Thrissur districts, particularly on April 28 and 29.
