- EC announces by-election schedule for three assembly seats.

The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for by-elections to three assembly seats in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat. As per the poll body's schedule, voting for these three seats will take place on July 30, and the results will be announced on August 3, 2026.
The assembly constituencies going to bypolls are Bankipur in Bihar, Datia in Madhya Pradesh and Manjalpur in Gujarat.
As per the official schedule released by the poll body, the bypoll process will formally begin with the issuance of a notification on July 6.
The nominations on each seat can be filed by aspiring candidates until July 13. The poll body will scrutinise all the nominations on the next day, July 14.
The candidates wishing to withdraw from the fray will be allowed to do so by July 16. Voting for all three assembly constituencies will be held from July 30 in the morning.
On August 3, the poll body will hold the vote counting and declare the results.
As the EC has announced the schedule, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has been implemented with immediate effect in the respective districts of the three states.
The governments, political parties and candidates will not be able to make new announcements or engage in any type of activity that might influence voters.
To ensure free, fair and transparent bypolls, the Election Commission has emphasised that the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at all polling booths will be mandatorily equipped with VVPAT machines, so that voters can confirm their votes.
Moreover, as per the Supreme Court instructions, candidates with criminal records or the parties giving them tickets will have to compulsorily make public complete details through advertisements in major newspapers, TV channels and on their official websites.
Why are bypolls being held?
Bankipur assembly seat in Bihar was held by BJP national president Nitin Nabin and fell vacant after he resigned and moved to the Rajya Sabha. The Datia assembly seat in Madhya Pradesh fell vacant after Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti was disqualified. The Manjalpur assembly seat in Gujarat fell vacant following the death of senior BJP MLA Yogeshbhai Narayandas Patel.
