The Election Commission is set to announce the dates for assembly elections on Sunday. A press conference will be held today at 4 pm, where the Commission is expected to reveal the election schedule for four states: Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu along with the Union Territory of Puducherry.
The terms of the legislative assemblies in these regions are set to end on different dates in May and June. This announcement follows the publication of the final electoral rolls for the four states and the Union Territory of Puducherry, as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters' list.
The Election Commission has been actively reviewing poll preparedness in several states, including West Bengal on March 9, Kerala on March 6, and Tamil Nadu on February 26. In addition, the poll body assessed Assam’s preparedness in February, focusing on security and the electoral rolls.
The Assam Assembly’s term will conclude on May 20, while Kerala’s assembly term ends on May 23. Tamil Nadu’s assembly will complete its term on May 10, and West Bengal’s assembly will conclude on May 7.
The Commission has also been in talks with political parties to ensure voter protection and evaluate the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF).
In a move aimed at enhancing the deployment of CAPF for the upcoming elections in West Bengal, the Election Commission has taken away the district administration's authority to control the movement of CAPF personnel.

Until the last elections, District Magistrates, including District Electoral Officers, were authorised to determine the movement of the CAPF before, during, or after the polls while the MCC was in force. However, this time, as the Commission decided, it will be the ECI-nominated police observers for the polls who will determine the CAPF movements for the respective districts.
